Container terminal with cranes at an export port

Why Process Discipline Matters in a Rising Sugar Market

Global Food Traders is releasing its updated Q4 price structure, and buyers should expect an upward correction. It is not opportunistic. It reflects three forces acting at the same time.

1. Rising costs along the supply chain

Diesel, labour, port fees, compliance and the cost of capital keep rising. We trade physical tonnage, and those costs are reflected at the port of loading.

2. A stronger US dollar

Sugar ICUMSA 45 is priced in US dollars. When buyers calculate contracts in weaker currencies, the cost of securing, hedging and financing multi-vessel contracts increases.

3. Tighter physical supply in Brazil

Mill allocations for export-grade ICUMSA 45 are tighter than in previous seasons, competition for loading slots is strong and physical inventory carries a premium at the main Brazilian terminals.

The procedure is non-negotiable

Over the past decade we have logged and analysed more than 30,000 quotations. The data points to one conclusion: following a tested, bank-secured procedure is the only reliable path to contract execution.

  • Payment guarantee: irrevocable SBLC (MT760) or DLC (MT700) issued by a bank acceptable to the Seller, or irrevocable funds blocked for one year and confirmed by MT799, always authenticated bank-to-bank via SWIFT.
  • Seller guarantee: 2% Performance Bond issued once the buyer’s instrument is confirmed as operative.
  • Quality and settlement: SGS inspection at the loading port and payment of each shipment by MT103 against shipping documents.

There are no side deals and no unverified proof of funds. The full process is published in our Trading Procedure.
