Buyer Protection: If a Sugar Offer Looks Too Good to Be True, It Is a Red Flag

If you source Brazilian ICUMSA 45 as a buyer or procurement manager, you know the stakes. You are not only buying a commodity; you are relying on a logistics chain that must perform.

Every week the same story repeats: buyers attracted by brokers who promise prices well below market, followed by delays, hidden costs or allocations that do not exist.

In physical commodity trading, safety and transparency are the foundation of the business. This is the checklist every buyer should demand:

  • Verifiable SGS inspection. Quality, quantity and weight certified at the port of loading (Santos or Paranaguá) before loading, including a polarization of 99.80% minimum.
  • Bank-to-bank instruments. SBLC (MT760), DLC (MT700) or MT799 blocked funds for one year, issued by a bank acceptable to the seller and authenticated via SWIFT. No advance payments.
  • Logistics visibility. Clear tracking from the mill to the vessel. A contract is only as good as the shipping space allocated to it.
  • KYC on both sides. Verified counterparties and sanctions screening before any offer is issued.
